Layer Colour. Build Texture. Create Fearlessly.
5 Days | 2 h / session
This 5-day evening intensive introduces adult learners and beginners to foundational colour drawing through an engaging exploration of dry mixed media techniques. Students will work across pencil crayons, soft pastels, oil pastels, watercolour pencils, and alcohol markers to build confidence in shading, blending, layering, texture, and expressive mark-making.
Each session focuses on hands-on experimentation and skill development, guiding students to understand how different materials interact and how to intentionally combine them within a single artwork. Emphasis is placed on process, observation, and creative decision-making, helping students develop both technical control and expressive freedom.
Throughout the week, students will explore:
- Layering, blending, and expressive colour techniques
- Texture-building and mark-making across multiple mediums
- Colour relationships, contrast, and visual depth
- Composition and planning through thumbnail sketches
- How to combine dry media without losing clarity or control
- Translating studies into a finished, cohesive mixed media artwork
By the end of the course, students will complete one independent 11 x 9 inch colour drawing that integrates multiple materials and demonstrates a strong understanding of layered colour, texture, and composition.

Meet the Instructor

Ivana Tovilla-Batiz is an honours graduate from OCAD University’s Drawing & Painting program and a proud RHAS alumna who began her artistic journey with us over a decade ago. Through the AICAD Exchange, she studied abroad at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Ivana also attended the prestigious Pre-College Summer Intensive Program for Illustration at Parsons The New School in New York. This workshop is designed for beginners and developing artists looking to build strong foundational skills in mixed media drawing. The focus will be on learning how to hone & use these mediums effectively altogether. This includes controlling value, mastering colour theory and using it to their advantage, as well as mark-making using all dry mediums such as pencil crayons, alcohol markers, oil & soft pastels, all on paper. Students will learn & explore how to capture textures, light, & layering, all with live-demonstrations.
