The Ultimate Hands-On Experience

Explore a wide range of traditional art materials in this dynamic 5-day evening intensive designed for adult learners and beginners looking to build confidence across multiple mediums. Each session introduces a different material and artistic process, giving students the opportunity to experiment, develop foundational skills, and discover new creative interests within a supportive studio environment. Emphasis is placed on exploration, process, and understanding the unique qualities of each medium while developing a stronger artistic foundation through hands-on practice and instructor guidance.
Throughout the week, students will work with & deepen their understanding of:
- Layering, blending, and expressive approaches
- Composition, creative decision-making, and material exploration
- Colour relationships, contrast, and building visual depth
- Translating ideas into finished studies with confidence and clarity
- Material behaviour and how different mediums respond to technique
- Day 1: Foundational drawing and observational techniques
- Day 2: Acrylic painting basics
- Day 3: Fountain pen and ink drawing techniques
- Day 4: Watercolour painting basics & mark-making
- Day 5: Soft and oil pastel handling, texture, and colour application

Meet the Instructor

Ivana Tovilla-Batiz is an honours graduate of OCAD University’s Drawing & Painting program and a proud RHAS alumna who began her artistic journey here over a decade ago. She works across both black-and-white and colour media, including graphite, charcoal, conté, acrylic, ink, pastel, and mixed media, with a focus on painterly drawing that blends drawing and painting through expressive mark-making and texture. She has also studied through the AICAD Exchange at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and completed the Pre-College Illustration Intensive at Parsons School of Design. Drawing on this diverse background, she emphasizes strong technical foundations while encouraging expressive, multi-medium exploration.
