Drawing Techniques in Graphite and Charcoal
8 weeks | 2.5 h / session
Uncover the expressive potential of light and shadow in this immersive workshop designed for beginner to intermediate adult artists. Working with traditional dry mediums such as graphite, compressed charcoal, and conté—you’ll learn how to build convincing depth, texture, and form by mastering chiaroscuro, the timeless technique of using dramatic contrasts between light and dark to bring drawings to life. Each week combines guided exercises, live demonstrations, and individual feedback to help you refine your technique and develop your own creative approach.
You’ll explore how to:
- Build realistic or expressive drawings through direct observation
- Layer, blend, and refine tones to achieve a dynamic value range
- Plan thoughtful compositions and work effectively from both references and life
- Use light and shadow intentionally to create mood, atmosphere, and impact
By the end of the workshop, you’ll not only gain technical confidence and control over your materials, but also a deeper appreciation for how light and shadow can transform your art.

All artworks shown were created by past students, many of whom were complete beginners or had little prior drawing experience.

Through the AICAD Exchange, Ivana studied abroad at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and she has also attended the prestigious Pre-College Summer Intensive Program for Illustration at Parsons The New School in New York. Drawing on her diverse training and professional practice, Ivana’s workshop invites students to explore the rich potential of black-and-white drawing, focusing on depth, value, contrast, and the play of light and shadow across different materials.
