Every accomplished artist was influenced by another great artist. This influence usually starts at an early age. This is why art gallery trips are an integral part of the art programs at Woodland Artists. We, in Richmond Hill, are lucky to have several major galleries within driving distance. Varley Art Gallery in Markham and McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg are my favorite places to take students. Both galleries feature fantastic permanent Canadian art collections. McMichael collection of the Group of Seven is without equal.

Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is great place to visit but is a bit far for regular school trips. Once in a while AGO holds exhibitions that are just too hard to pass up. Marc Chagall and the Russian Avant-garde is just such an event.

Marc Chagall The Blue Circus

The Blue Circus

Serious art can at times be intimidating, especially for the younger kids. Not the art of Marc Chagall. Chagall is famous for his extensive use of colour and whimsical playful themes that kids love. Circus is the favorite theme of Chagall and what kid doesn’t like circus! Goats and fish floating over villages all in brilliant colours, depiction of simple village life create an atmosphere of joy. Kids like the simplicity of the paintings and are encouraged enough to believe they too could paint a scene just like the one Chagall has done.

I’ve scouted the exhibition and I liked what I saw. I’ve arranged for a tour for 24 people with a knowledgeable guide. This trip will be a memorable experience. You and your child will not be disappointed.

See you at the “Chagall at the AGO” this Sunday, November 27. Our guided tour starts at 3:00pm and we are going to gather at the lobby about 15 minutes earlier.
