junior art lessons: art making techniques

In this level students enjoy art lessons that reinforce not only an understanding of colour theory and good composition, but focus on how to properly and skillfully use different art materials (mediums) such as acrylic paints, pastels, ink, charcoal pencils, and watercolours. They revisit the 7 elements of art and get introduced to various principles of design. Here, art history and making meaningful connections between what they absorb in class and the world around them is brought further into focus. Their more solid understanding of elements and principles of design serves as basis for describing prominent artwork made by artists like Matisse, Van Gogh, Vasily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, Picasso and others. Slowly focus shifts to generating original ideas and use their own imagination as they confidently use a mix of materials.  Read Margaret Brooks article on young children drawing.
