Another Art Expo Richmond Hill Local Art Program has come and gone, and we wanted to take the time to reflect on its success. Being an art school, we believe that it is important to showcase our students and their talent, and to show them how proud we are of their art. On June 21, 2015, we did just that. Richmond Hill Art School organized an Art Exhibition to honour students, filling the studio with art and artists, music and musicians, family and friends. Over 250 guests attended making this quite an eventful affair!

Every year, we strive to make the Art Expo bigger and better than the one before. This year, we did have a few minor set backs – a thunderstorm warning is minor, right? –  we not only had to move everything inside, but had to wait until the very morning of our event to mount the artwork on freshly painted walls. Despite these challenges, we were able to transform our studio into an art gallery within two hours, with hors d’oeuvres and champagne lining the bar and our student’s artwork priced, labelled, and ready to sell.

Our students, as young as 5 years old, were selling their artwork alongside paintings from professional artists. Some students were nervous to part with their darling work, but were all smiles when their parents and grandparents bought back their art and donated the money to charity. With these sales, and the generous donations from friends and family, we were able to raise $500 for 360ºkids  charity that delivers programs and support services to at-risk youth.

This year, for the first time ever, we introduced Awards of Excellence, and invited prominent artists to recognize the students whose work stood out to them.

Our first juror, David Ward, is a very established Canadian Artist and Author, whose art focuses on wilderness landscapes and the big outdoors. David has exhibited throughout Canada, the United States, as well as at the famous Lotte Gallery in Soeul, South Korea. He has worked with the Royal Canadian Mint where he designed Canada’s Arctic Landscape coin.

Our second juror, highly acclaimed Russian-born artist Anna Razumovskaya, has her own distinctive style that resonates with audiences worldwide. Her work exudes the elegance and grace of romanticism, and yet, is modern and original.

Anna and David combed through the hundreds of artwork displayed at the studio, and after much deliberation, chose 6 very talented students. A big congratulations goes out to Lauren Hoffman, Vikita Mehta, Ana Milu, Celia Petconi, Miyuki Yamada, and Jasma Zhou! These students not only received recognition for their hard work, but received gift packs of art materials and tuition gift certificates generously sponsored by both “DeSerres” and Richmond Hill Art School. “DeSerres” also sponsored our social canvas, where everyone had the chance to leave their mark on this year’s graphic theme. We are proud to have it hang in the studio!

What’s next for our studio? While many register last minute for our summer camps and save their spots for September’s ART CLASSES, many choose to get a much needed break from routine. Our teachers, staff, and students alike take the time to travel, relax, and collect inspiration for their next artwork while soaking up the rays of the summer sun.
